Deepeeka – Viking Shield with Norse Serpent Knotwork- Jörmungandr

The shield face is hand-painted with intricate Norse knotwork of entwined serpents, depicting Jörmungandr, the Midgard serpent.

In Norse myth, Jörmungandr is a sea serpent so vast that he encircles the world at the edge of the oceans, biting his own tail. When he lets go, the world will end at Ragnarök. In this sense he holds the world in balance. The image echoes the wider Ouroboros, the serpent eating its tail, a symbol of destruction, rebirth and the endless cycle between.

The round shield was the standard defensive equipment of the Viking Age, carried by warriors of every rank, from farmer-levies to elite retainers. In battle, shields were locked edge to edge to form the skjaldborg, or shield wall, each warrior's shield protecting himself and part of his neighbour.

Deepeeka's reproduction is built from stout plywood with a steel rim for extra durability. An antiqued steel boss at the centre leaves ample room for the hand, and three riveted wooden bars reinforce the reverse, the central one leather-wrapped as the grip.
