Full description
This is a reproduction of a 10th-century Viking Age axe found in 1931 at Stenstugu, on Gotland, Sweden; the original is held by Gotlands Museum. The blade has a cross-shaped cut-out, a feature linked to Scandinavia's shift from paganism to Christianity. The cross may also have resembled Thor's hammer, which would have made it acceptable to people on both sides of that change.
It suits living history, display, film and theatre, and collectors.
