Petersen Type A Viking Axe – Etched Urnes Beast

Petersen's Type A is among the earliest axe forms in his 1919 typology, in use until about 840 AD. It is defined by small symmetrical spurs and a broad, symmetrical blade. This example has a noticeably narrower blade than the standard profile, a variation well attested in surviving Type A finds, where blade width could vary considerably.

The etching is in the Urnes style, the final and most refined phase of Viking Age art, which flourished from about 1050 into the 12th century and is named after the carved panels of the stave church at Urnes, Norway. Urnes work is known for elegant, almost minimalist curves: a great four-legged beast drawn out into a long, sinuous ribbon, locked in a figure-eight interlace with one or two slender serpents.

The high-carbon steel head is mounted on a carved hardwood haft. It ships unsharpened, so it is safe to handle and display as it arrives.
