Full description
This sword recreates a find from the Birka Barrow Cemetery in Sweden, recovered in 1949 during D. Avdusin's excavation of Barrow L-35, a double cremation burial. The original swords of this form date from the early 9th to mid-10th century, when the legendary Ulfberht blades were renowned across Europe for their craftsmanship and steel.
The type is hard to classify precisely, because Petersen's Types H and I are closely related and differ mainly in the size of the crossguard and pommel base. Most surviving H/I swords come from Birka.
One face of the original blade bore an “ULFBREH+T” mark and the other a lattice-weave design. Traces of brass or copper on the pommel suggest it was once coated, and a related find indicates the crossguard was once covered in thin brass plates riveted to the iron frame.
Part of Deepeeka's Gunther series of historian-guided Viking sword reconstructions, this piece reproduces the lattice-weave design as etchings on both blade faces. Suited to collectors of Swedish Viking Age history and to living history of the Birka trading settlement.
