Primus Petersen Type D Viking Sword – Rus Chieftain Pattern

This sword faithfully recreates a Petersen Type D sword associated with the C-2 Barrow burial, linked to Viking Age finds in Eastern Europe and the lands influenced by the Kievan Rus.

The original was found beneath the remains of a funeral pyre, bent and deliberately placed as part of the burial rite, a common practice in Viking and Rus tradition symbolising the sword's passage from the world of the living to that of the dead.

Petersen dated Type D swords to the 9th and early 10th century, though later scholarship, including that of archaeologist F.A. Androshchuk, extends their use into the first half of the 10th century, a dynamic period of exchange between Scandinavia and the Rus territories. The original blade bears an “O”-shaped mark on one face and a cross-like mark on the other, possibly a maker's mark, an identifier, or an early sign of religious influence.
