Primus Petersen “Type D” Viking Sword (Scandinavia, 9th–10th Century)

Petersen Type D swords are among the earliest classified Viking sword forms, typically dated to the 9th and early 10th centuries and found across Scandinavia and the wider Viking world.

The type is defined by its distinctive tri-lobed pommel, a raised central lobe flanked by two lower ones, on a solid, heavily built hilt. Surviving examples often come from burials of high-status individuals, and the broad blade and wide fuller suggest a sword built as much to project authority as to cut.
