Full description

The detailed hilt of this 8th-century Anglo-Saxon sword is reproduced from the Fetter Lane sword, a prized piece in the British Museum. Only the pommel and half the grip of the original survive, but they are in excellent condition and show the fine craftsmanship of swords carried by Saxon kings and champions. One side of the hilt has spiralling, serpent-like patterns in cast relief; the other shows a bird-like creature in complex knotwork.

This reproduction recreates the original's fine detailing and extends the motif across the rest of the hilt. The blade is hand-forged from high-carbon steel and tempered. The hilt is cast in brass with an antiqued bronze finish, and the contrasting silver-like bands on the guard and pommel are nickel-plated steel, replicating tin, which was prized for decoration because of its scarcity and resemblance to silver. Like originals of the period, the pommel is two-part, with a separate cap riveted over the base.

The sword comes with a matching wooden scabbard bound tightly in stitched leather with antiqued brass fittings. A wooden suspension loop, fixed with thick leather bands, anchors the straps of your own baldric or belt.
