Viking Type K Axe with Etched Norse Wolf Design

Petersen's Type K dates to about 900–1030 AD and is defined by shallow, rounded spurs, a notably short eye and a long, gently curved blade. It is one of the more refined later Viking Age forms, from a time when the axe was increasingly a marker of a warrior's status.

Both faces of the head are etched with a wolf motif, a nod to the wolves of Norse myth, from Fenrir to Odin's companions Geri and Freki. The C60 high-carbon steel head sits directly on the haft, secured with a heavy rivet and a steel wedge for a tight, lasting fit. Knotted, riveted bands of vegetable-tanned leather and a spiralled leather grip finish the haft.
