Viking Type L Axe with Etched Norse Design

Petersen's Type L was in use from about 940 to as late as 1200 AD, spanning the end of the Viking Age and the early medieval period. It has blunted spurs, a long, gently curved blade and a distinctive eye shape.

Type L is often confused with the larger Type M “Dane axe”. The two developed side by side, and scholars describe the line between them as narrow, with Type L generally the shorter and narrower of the pair.

Both faces of the head are etched with Norse knotwork. The EN45 high-carbon steel head sits directly on the haft, secured with a heavy rivet and a steel wedge for a tight, lasting fit. Knotted, riveted bands of vegetable-tanned leather and a spiralled leather grip finish the haft.
