Petersen's Type L was in use from roughly 940 to as late as 1200 AD, spanning the very end of the Viking Age and into the early Medieval period. It carries blunted spurs and a long, gently curved blade, with a distinctive eye shape that sets it apart from its contemporaries. Type L is frequently confused with the larger Type M 'Dane axe' - the two developed alongside each other, and the line between them is often described by scholars as genuinely narrow, with Type L generally the shorter and narrower of the pair.
Deepeeka's reproduction finishes both faces of the head with etched Norse knotwork.
