Viking Wolf Helm – 10th Century Norse Helmet

Few objects symbolize the Viking Age more than the spectacle helmet. The best-known surviving example, the Gjermundbu helmet from 10th-century Norway, shows that real Viking helmets were practical and robust, not horned. Their eye guard and nasal strengthened the front of the helmet while preserving good visibility, and wealthier warriors often added decorative metalwork as a mark of status.

The Viking Wolf Helm draws on these designs and adds polished brass ornamentation in the tradition of Norse metalwork. The bold decorative brow and crest evoke the wolf, an animal closely tied to Norse myth and legendary warriors, and give the helmet an impressive ceremonial look.

It is handcrafted from 18-gauge mild steel, with leather-hinged cheek plates, a riveted chainmail aventail and an adjustable leather suspension liner for comfort during extended wear. A leather chin strap with brass buckle secures the fit, and an extra strap keeps the cheek plates in place. A striking centrepiece for collectors, museums, living history and reenactment.
