The best-known surviving Viking helmet is the Gjermundbu Helmet, discovered in Norway and dating to the 10th century. Unlike the horned helmets often portrayed in popular culture, archaeological evidence shows that Viking helmets were practical, robust, and designed for effective protection.

Spectacle helmets featured a distinctive eye guard and nasal section that strengthened the front of the helmet while preserving excellent visibility. Wealthier individuals often enhanced their armour with decorative metalwork, demonstrating both status and exceptional craftsmanship.
